Is Teaching Still Right For You?

Being a teacher is a difficult profession and comes with many challenges. To be an effective teacher there are many things that one must do. The first, and most important thing that one must do to be an effective teacher is to truly have a desire to be a teacher. Once that desire is lost, it becomes much more difficult, if not impossible, to be an effective teacher.

So what happens if you have lost that desire to teach? What if you truly do not know why you are doing this anymore? This is when you need to do some soul searching. It may be that you simply need to take a step back and reassess your reasons for getting into the teaching profession to begin with. Are these reasons still there? Do you still have a desire to teach but maybe just need to do something to renew your enthusiasm? Maybe you need a change such as a different audience. For example if you are teaching high school students maybe you need to teach elementary school students for awhile or maybe you need to work on a higher degree and teach college level students.

If you don’t feel that a change of scenery is the issue, is it that you simply need to take a break from teaching for a short time to refresh yourself? Maybe you simply need to take some continuing education courses that may improve your teaching skills or may give you a new perspective, some new ideas, or even some new teaching techniques that you can take back to the classroom with you?

After doing some serious thinking and soul searching you now need to make some decisions. Either you still have a desire to be a great teacher and will take the necessary steps to refresh yourself, or you need to move on and find a new profession.

Communication Between Teachers and Parents

There are many careers in which you need good communication to be good at them. Being a teacher is one of them. Not only do you need good communication with your students, but you need to be able to communicate well with other members of the staff and your students’ parents. Being able to communicate well with parents is very important, and if you are able to it will help your students out as well.

There are some parents that don’t care how their child does in school, but the vast majority does. Try to find ways to let parents know how their child is doing in your class whether they are extremely bright, or don’t put forth any effort.

One of the best ways to be able to communicate with every student’s parents is to create a group email. Toward the beginning of the class have your students or the parents themselves give you their email. You can then send out newsletters periodically, and you have each parent’s email if you need to speak to them privately about a student.

Try to inform parents about their children’s grades several weeks before the semester ends. This way, the parents can talk to their child about their grade and if they need to work a little harder to boost the grade up. They also won’t be as surprised when the end of the semester comes and will appreciate the effort you put forth to be so helpful and informative.

Be available for parent teacher conferences. Even if someone’s child isn’t having problems in class, some parents come to see how their children are doing, whether it’s bad or good, and see what you have to say about them. A lot of parents like to talk to each teacher their child has so they can see how they’re doing in each subject. If you aren’t available they won’t see what their child is accomplishing in that subject.

Talking to Your Students

When you are a teacher, it is an important thing to make sure that you keep up with your students. Talking with your students is a very crucial part of being a teacher. In fact, knowing what is going on with them can help them in the classroom. This may seem silly, but if they know that you care, they are more likely to do well.

Of course, there is a line. You don’t want to become too personal with your students – this can come off badly. But making sure that they know that they can talk to you if there is a problem, or even if they just need to talk to someone, is going to help.

Many times, students, especially in high school, don’t feel comfortable with their teachers, or any adults for that matter. This is why it is important to show them that you are someone that they can talk to. If they know that they have someone to go to, they are less likely to get into trouble. On top of that, there will be someone there if they are already in trouble, depressed, or otherwise having problems.

Understanding that students may have a hard time opening up to you, but attempting to have a friendship with them anyway is a step that many teachers make. On the other hand, many feel that it is not necessary. They feel that you are there to teach the children, not be their friend. Part of teaching, though, is making sure that everything is ok with the students. The best and easiest way to do this is through talking with the students.

You don’t even have to do much to show your students that you are there for them. Being friendly, and open to talking is about all there is when it comes to this.

Using Effective Communication

When thinking about communication as a teacher, there are many aspects to take into account. You will find that there are many different people that you need to talk to, and have good communication with.

First, you will have to be able to communicate with your coworkers. Being able to talk with the other teachers in your school, as well as the principle and school board members is important. You will find that, since these are the people that you work with on a regular basis, you will probably want to have a good relationship with them. Being able to effectively communicate what you want or need to the school board is important when it comes time to make classroom decisions.

You will also need to communicate with your students. This is on a few different levels. You will need to be able to communicate your lessons, and what they are trying to learn, but you will find that it is also important to be able to communicate other things, as well. Many times, students are looking for a teacher that they can connect with, one that they can talk to. Being that teacher is a great thing that many strive for.

Communication with the parents of your students is important as well, but can be a little more difficult. You may find that you don’t talk with the parents often, and therefore, when you do, it can be a little awkward. Try talking with the parents of your students more often, and not only about problems that may be going on. Share the good things as well.

As with many jobs, communication is important. It is also important as a teacher to understand the age group and mind set of the group that you are trying to communicate with. Depending on who you are talking to, what you say and how you say it may change drastically.

Taking Classes as a Teacher

You may find, as a teacher, that you want to work a little more on a skill that you have. You may want to take an extra class or two, whether it is something that will help you in your teaching, or it is just something that you are interested in. No matter the reasoning, you will find at times during the course of your career that you want to learn something new.

Unfortunately, you may also find that you don’t really have the time to fit a class or two into your schedule. Being a teacher can make for a busy enough day as it is. So, if you are wanting or needing to take some classes, what options do you have?

First, you will find that you may be able to take the classes that you want in the evenings or on the weekends. There are many schools that offer this as an alternative to the traditional school day, for those that work. This is a great option if you would like to stick to a traditional brick and mortar school. These classes may take a little longer to complete, or the class may be hours longer than the norm, but they do allow you to take the classes you want, with an alternate schedule.

Another option would be to take your classes online. There are many schools today that offer their courses through the Internet. Taking these classes online is a great way for a teacher to be able to further educate themselves, without worrying about the time restrictions that they may have. Being able to attend your classes when you are able to is important for many people today, teachers included. The flexibility that online course offer is better suited for some than night and evening classes. Just keep in mind that you won’t have someone reminding you that you have homework to turn in!

Get Out of That Rut!

Finding that you get bored with what you know and do all day long can be a frustrating thing for anyone, but especially for a teacher. If you are bored with things, this will come off in the classroom, and your students may feel like you don’t enjoy teaching them. There are things that you can do to shake things up a little bit, and get out of your boredom.

For example, many teachers decide to take a class in a subject that is completely different from what they teach. This is a good way to get your mind working, and pull yourself out of a rut. Whether you decide to take a random course that is different from what you teach, or you find one that you are extremely interested in, the choice is up to you. The whole point of this is to get your mind and your creative juices flowing, so that you don’t feel like you are stuck in a rut.

Sometimes, this does not work, or for one reason or another the teacher is unable to currently take a class. If this is the case, what are some other things that you can do to keep yourself going?

Take a day off. Everyone needs a little bit of recuperation time now and then. Even though it may not be your favorite idea, you may find that you need to take a day off every once in a while to rejuvenate. On this day off, do something you love to do, but generally don’t have time for. Sleep in, and relax. Remember, this day is for you.

Try to come up with a fun project. Whether this is something that you want to do in the classroom, or something that is just for you, coming up with a project is generally a good cure for boredom.

Practice What You Teach

We have all heard the phrase “practice what you preach”. When you are a teacher, it is a good idea to keep this in mind, but maybe change it up a little bit to “practice what you teach”. Knowing your subject, and actually taking a part in it, are two completely different things.

Many teachers today just teach. This is where people get the idea that those who can, do; those who can’t, teach. Many teachers do not actually DO what they teach. This can be frustrating to the teacher and the class.

If you are finding that you want your class to be a little better, and pop a little more, you may want to consider doing what you teach. Your students will likely be able to better relate, if you have personal experience with what you are trying to get them to do. And by personal experience, we don’t mean you took the classes to become their teacher.

For example, if you are an English teacher, you may want to consider writing. Try to get something published. Or, at least join a book club. Being able to have personal experience with what you are teaching is a wonderful teaching tool.

One of the best examples of this is a music teacher. If you are a music teacher, who never plays music, your students may find that the class is a little lackluster. So, put together a band again (you know you’ve had one before!), start singing karaoke, or even just doing some of the music at church.

The point is to do what you love. If you are teaching a subject, generally this means that you have an interest in that subject. Show this interest to the world, and your class. They will appreciate you, and your teaching much more.

Keeping Adult Students Interested

Many times, teachers who are dealing with adult students feel that it is just as difficult, if not more so, to keep the attention of these adults as it is to keep the attention of children. Though at first glance, this may seem like a silly statement, when you really start to think about it, it makes sense.

As adults, these students have a whole lot on their minds. They have to worry about work, family, friends, and now school, too. With everything that is going on in the world, and in each person’s life, it can actually be shocking to find out that that some students are able to concentrate and do well in school.

When teaching adults, you need to be conscious of the fact that, even though they are in school, they have other priorities. Your class may not mean as much to them as you would like. This is an unfortunate side effect of teaching adults. Unlike with elementary, middle school, and high school, they do not have to be there. They are there by choice. Strangely enough, though, this choice does not always mean that they will be interested and engaged in what is going on in the class.

There are some things that you can do to keep adult students interested, though. One of the biggest things is to treat them like adults. As a teacher, this may be more difficult, especially if you have taught younger people in the past. In some cases, you may even find that your students are older than you. Keep this in mind – don’t talk down to your students, and realize that they have experience in life. Keeping things interesting, instead of just lectures, is also a good way to keep adult students interested in your class.

Discipline in the Classroom

Discipline in the classroom has been a controversial topic for many years. Some people think that there should be no discipline in the classroom, while others feel that not nearly enough is being used. No matter which way you lean, it is important to understand a few things.

Discipline in the classroom is completely different than discipline at home. Being able to control a class is important as a teacher, and one of the best ways to be able to do that is through discipline. When we talk about discipline, we are not talking about spanking, or sending a student to a corner. Of course, as a teacher, these are things that you would not do. Instead, there are other forms of discipline that may be used. For example, extra homework, talking to the parents, or being sent to the principle’s office.

There are reasons that discipline is important. Many students get out of hand. They may be rowdy, obnoxious, or just plain rude. There has to be some sort of counter balance, and you have to be allowed to do something about these problems. Keeping a class focused is a big part of being a teacher, and if you have students that are disrupting the class, this is something that can not be tolerated in most cases.

Make a discipline plan. Make sure that your students know and understand it. Before class starts, though, make sure that you get it approved by the correct people. You don’t want to do something that is against policy. If you feel that your plan is reasonable, and it is not approved, consider finding out why. This can help you better understand the policies that the school has on discipline.

No one likes to talk about, or think about discipline. Unfortunately, though, it is sometimes required.
