More and more people are choosing to attend school online. As this option has become more popular there are an increasing number of schools offering degrees online. Teaching degrees online are no exception. There are colleges all over the United States offering online teaching degrees from initial licensure to continuing education courses and advanced degrees in teaching. Attending college online is a great option for many people but may not necessarily be the option for you. Once you have determined if this is the best option for you, choosing the right school is the next step.

Western Governors University (WGU) is accredited with the NCATE as the only exclusively online school offering teaching degrees completely online. Although the requirements for teaching licensure are different from state to state, the majority of states accept applications for initial teaching licensure from WGU graduates. WGU claims to have the lowest tuition costs for an online teaching degree program. The degrees offered at WGU are Bachelors degrees and Masters degrees in education.

University of Phoenix is a fully accredited school offering online courses as well as on-campus courses for education degrees including Associates in Elementary Education, Associates in Paraprofessional Education, Bachelor of Science in Education, Master of Arts in Education, Doctor of Education, and continuing education courses for already licensed teachers.

Another popular school offering online teaching degrees is Kaplan University. Kaplan University offers Masters degrees and graduate certification in education.

Research the schools you are interested in fully to determine that they are fully accredited and that your degree will be accepted in the state you are planning to work in.

Being Taught While Teaching

Just because you happen to teach a particular subject doesn’t mean that you have to stop learning about it. Truthfully, the more you spend teaching something, the more you should be committed to learning everything you can. When a student walks into your room, they expect that you are going to be giving them the very best knowledge available. If you cannot provide that then the student suffers.

The goal for any teacher is to continue to get better. It’s understandable that you lead a busy life. The life of a teacher extends far being the first and last bells of the day. There is work to be done at home, before school, and on the weekends.

For teachers to better themselves, both in the classroom and in the work place, they must be looking into further education. The good news for the teachers who are hopeful that they will be able to go back to school is that with online degrees, these teachers can get an education without having to worry about the commute eating up big chunks of their time. It’s a lot more convenient.

The biggest advantage to going back to school is that there are better jobs out there with a higher or more specialized education. Going back to school doesn’t have to mean getting your Ph. D. Of course, that doesn’t mean it is ruled out, but rather that you may also choose to get accredited in a specific skill or learning technique. This can lead to employers finding you of more value. Employers want people to work for them who are interested in bettering themselves. This is the perfect example of a teacher wanting more than just their degree.

If anything, the world of online education is worth exploring. It won’t hurt to find out your worth. Teachers are an invaluable resource in the world. It would be great to see them better themselves.

Keep Young Students Interested

When you are teaching younger children, it is a whole different world than teaching older children or adults. Young children have shorter attention spans, generally will get frustrated and give up sooner, and are honestly still in the process of learning how to learn. Because of this, it can be a stressful thing for a teacher to try to keep the students engaged, occupied, and still learning at the same time. There are some things that you can do to help with these things, though.

Use Colors

We all know that colors pull the eye. With smaller children, they are not only learning their colors, but they are interested in all of the colors in the world around them. Using these colors to help in your lessons is a great option. Even if what you are teaching currently has nothing to do with the colors, it can help pull the attention of the children. For example, have the numbers that they are learning in bright colors to keep them interested.

Games and Puzzles

Many preschool and young elementary age children love to play games and play with puzzles. Incorporate these into the learning, and you are much more likely to keep them interested. Make a game out of what you are teaching them, whether it’s a word hunt, or a puzzle that they can make and then take home.

Use Stories and Songs

One of the most well known ways to keep children engaged is through song and story. These are things that these children can relate to, and understand. It helps if it is a rhyme, but this is not always necessary. The important part is that it is something that is age and level appropriate to what you are teaching.

Role Playing in the Classroom

Using role playing in the classroom is something of a controversy in many areas. When someone says role playing, there are many different things that can come to mind. When we are talking about role playing in the classroom, though, it is assumed that one is talking about using acting, or playing out a role, as an educational tool. In fact, this is an educational tool that can be very helpful and extremely useful.

Many students learn best by doing. Listening to a lecture or taking notes does not help them grasp the information quite as well. This can make it hard for these students to do well in many classes. In a lot of cases, though, adding in a little bit of role playing into the lesson can help. This is very useful in some classes, but doesn’t work in others.

So, what are some examples of adding role playing into the classroom? Well, if you are a social studies teacher, for example, your students may be learning about the judicial system. If this is the case, you have a perfect opportunity to bring a little bit of fun, and education, into the classroom. Have the class perform a mock trial. Give everyone in the class a role, whether it be judge, jury, defendant, witness, etc. Give them a case that they have to go through from beginning to end. This is a nice break for the students from reading a text book and listening to a lecture, and it also gives those that learn best from doing an opportunity to better understand how it all works.

On top of that, it can give you a much needed break from lecturing every day. You may need to guide some points of the mock trial, but over all, it gives the students the freedom to express themselves while they are learning.

Pros and Cons of No Child Left Behind

If you are a teacher in the United States, it is inevitable that you have heard of the No Child Left Behind act. This act was officially put into place in 2002, and only officially went into effect for five years. It has currently been temporarily extended, and President Obama has plans to continue it after a review. There are many people that are for the No Child Left Behind act, and also many people that are against it. Some feel that it is a good idea in theory, but lacks a lot in practice. So, what are some of the pros and cons of the No Child Left Behind act?

Pros

Many feel that this act is a very good step toward accountability of schools. They feel that because of this act, many schools are now stepping up to better educate the children in the school district. There are many standards that are set by this act, both on the education level, and on what it requires to become an educator.

Math, reading, and writing have all come under scrutiny, and now have a much higher emphasis in the school systems.

The No Child Left Behind act is supposed to focus on helping students that are underprivileged, by giving them a quality education, rather than leaving them behind in the dust.

Cons

There has been significant under funding of the act, which makes it very difficult for schools to perform to the level expected.

This act encourage teaching to test. Basically, instead of teaching the students so that they learn, they are now frequently taught just to pass the testing that is required.

The standardized testing that has been put into place is said to be ridiculously low in standards, which is exactly the opposite of what it was meant to be.
