If given a year to complete assignments, some students will wait till the last week before the deadline and then try to complete everything in a week, causing them to do poorly in the course. For these, it’s better to have weekly deadlines forcing them to get assignments done on a regular basis.

Getting a Degree

Once you’ve found the right program, the next step is to complete the degree. Many think, “I’ll earn my degree and then start my career.” This is a worthy goal, and by keeping this in mind, along with knowing you’ll finally have a job you enjoy, you’ll be able to keep yourself motivated.

Teaching Online Classes

Teaching an online class is a topic that does not seem to come up very often. In fact, it is rarely discussed, yet there are thousands of online learners in the United States alone, and for every learner, there is a teacher guiding the process. Online teaching is very closely related to regular classroom teaching, with a few exceptions. Some of the exception include the daily interaction, that is not present, and the constant repleneshment of lessons. For most programs, once a teacher has established a program for their class, it tends to stay status quo until the school requires changes, or the accredidation firms have required change. This means that when students enroll in an unconventional classroom setting, they are not missing out.

For instance, schools like WGU, Western Governors University, or Kaplan have their programs set up so that a student can enroll at any time, and they will be given a class load, of their choosing, that needs to be done before the six month mark arises. The setup is nice for learners who know a lot about a particular topic because of life experience, or previous education, the classes could take as little as a weekend to complete. This would have been unheard of a decade ago. Another example is with the University of Phoenix. There enrollment program is set up to accomodate adult learners. In fact, during the evaluation period for enrolling into their school, a student can write a five page essay on why their life experience has provided them an education. Based on the details provided, schools are able to provide credit for course work.

What does all this mean for teachers of these programs? That they have to be flexible, and willing to accept unconventional work for their assignments. This also means that communication is limited based on student schedules. Because there is so much flexibility for the students, teachers are given the challenge to work within the schools parameters in order to provide the best education possible, without interfering with the philosophy that adult learners are already educated through life experience.

Learning On Your Own Time

Learning on your own time is the best benefit of the online learning environment. In fact, that is the key to its quickly expanding popularity among adult learners. For the adult learner that is returning back to school for a certificate, or degree, it is very difficult, especially if their is employment or a family that is already established. These things can be very difficult to work around, and for many, they make schooling an impossibility. This has been why so many people have not been able to return to school, until now.

The online environment, and colleges, have been situated so that the class times are completely dictated by the student, and his or her needs. Professors are not paid in salary, rather per unit that they teach. This means that not only is learning more accommodating for students, but also more cost effective.

For an adult learner returning to school, it is important to remember that there will be time involved in your studies. You will still have projects, papers, and there is usually some type of observation or proctored situation in order to provide validity of your work. Some institutions require that all work is done in a group fashion, therefore guaranteeing student accountability. For many students, group work is not appealing, and just the scheduling, you are able to seek out a program that best suits your needs. This includes schools, and programs of study that work best for your situation, including your learning style, budget, and time frame in which you wish to complete your education.

Online learning has become more than just a fad, it has become a way of bringing education to the student in the 21st century. The progress made in education has usually been on the edge of technology, and online education is no exception. Online education is extremely versatile and can be adapted to handle many different learning styles, schedules, and situations involving learners with special needs. The latter is the most impressive advancement made to date.

According to IDEA ’04, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act revised 2004, it has been stated that any and all accommodations must be made in order to help with the educational process for those that require help. Online learning has bridged this challenge with a remarkable, and relatively inexpensive answer.  Even as recently as five years ago, students with special needs that could handle semi-mainstream classroom environments still struggled, because the inclusion model was not the most conducive for their learning needs. Again, this is a fantastic new development for students. Online learning has also expanded the area of Math and Science, the two subjects that the United States has fallen behind in the global market place. Colleges are able to post more classes, require more math and science, and because they are online, students do not feel that they are forced to take more classes, rather they are eligible for more classes.
