Student Life

Being a student is considered a child’s full-time job. Teachers say that many students need to focus on their education, and that failing to do so is the equivalent of a full-time employee slacking on the job. While this may sound harsh, it is for a reason. Students will need to succeed in school in order to have success later on in life. This is regardless of the choice to attend college, vocational schooling, or just future employment. Many of the choices that students make during their schooling is a true reflection of how they will be when they are entering the workforce marketplace. Many students that are not as reliable during their schooling career find that they have a tough time being an independent adult, and they quickly begin to make changes in order to be successful, or they remain the same.

In order to be a successful students, it is imperative that you are on time, prepared, and have all work completed. While this may sound cliche, these are the same requirements for the real world. Many students get tired quickly because they hear the same three rules for years, but in truth, schooling is preparing a child for success when they are responsible for themselves, and their future families. Students must be dedicated, and committed to working hard, and doing their best, so that they are able to take advantage of all the possibilities and positive opportunities that come their way. For those that struggle with this aspect of schooling life they may need assistance, and help in order to be directed onto the best path for their needs. In some cases, transitional services are required to help, as the student is truly struggling. These services are in place to help students have the same successes regardless of difficulties.

Secondary Education

Secondary education, otherwise known as High School, is an important time of life during a students career. Many of the decisions made by young people while in High School can have lasting affects over their lifetime. One such decision that can have a detrimental affect is that of choosing to go to college, or to not go to college. For many students today, college is not the right path for them, and especially in today’s economy, many are finding that trade schools are a better option. This means that the push for high grades, and test scores, are not that demanding, as these are not necessities in order to qualify for vocational programs. The dilemma has come about with the massive amount of highly educated people in an over saturated career market. Many of these people have learned that their education is not a full ticket for employment, and have massive student loans that they can not pay.

For those that desire to attend college, many are realizing that they want to take time off between High School and the beginning of their college career because they are feeling a burned out with the push from High School. In fact, many Psychologists are saying that this is a wise move for students, as it helps them re-energize, refocus, and to come up with a plan that many will be comfortable living with for many years to come, this would include majors and career paths. This study was completed because there were so many people that found that their careers were unfulfilling, and they were returning to school to begin a new career. Many of the High School graduates that are choosing this path are finding that the break, and working time between schooling is most beneficial because it gives them true insight into the requirements of being an independent adult; that it helps them understand the demands and what they will need to have in order to be successful later in life.

Teaching

There are many teachers in the United States, and all are required to have rigorous credentialing in order to be qualified to instruct students. There is not a teacher in a classroom today that does not have a Bachelors degree, as well as an additional one to two years of schooling for licensures. This means that when a teacher is at their basic minimum for being in the classroom, most will already have their Masters degree, and will be making about $20,000 more a year. The trade off for most is the schedule. Most teachers are afforded a 10 month schedule, however, what many do not realize is that while there is the time off, many teachers are working approximately 60 hours a week. The running theme is that a teacher needs to pack 12 months worth of materials into 10 months. This does mean long hours, nights out for school events, dealing with parents, and on top of that, remaining completely up to date with Federal and State standards for optimal teaching.

Many teachers use their breaks to take more classes to become up to date on the latest teaching techniques, and during the summers, many work on graduate work, or extended education. This equates to a teacher working a full 12months out of the year, and only getting paid for 10 months. There is a lot of work involved with this profession that people do not fully understand. The common misconception is that the younger the grades, the easier the task. This could not be further from the truth. It is the primary grades that a child will learn the essentials of reading, writing, and math. Teachers need to be masters of analyzing a child’s work in order to ensure that they will be prepared to move on to other topics, or even other grade levels. This is a very challenging, and time consuming time for a child and a teacher. That is why it is imperative that teachers are dedicated to their profession so that students can succeed.

Learning On Your Own Time

Learning on your own time is the best benefit of the online learning environment. In fact, that is the key to its quickly expanding popularity among adult learners. For the adult learner that is returning back to school for a certificate, or degree, it is very difficult, especially if their is employment or a family that is already established. These things can be very difficult to work around, and for many, they make schooling an impossibility. This has been why so many people have not been able to return to school, until now.

The online environment, and colleges, have been situated so that the class times are completely dictated by the student, and his or her needs. If a student chooses to work solely at night on school work, this is now a possibility. The other factor is that many of these schools are not as expensive as brick and mortar establishments, simply because the overhead is not as high. There are no building to maintain, and the professors tend to be qualified professionals that are currently working in the field of study that the student is interested in. Professors are not paid in salary, rather per unit that they teach. This means that not only is learning more accommodating for students, but also more cost effective.

For an adult learner returning to school, it is important to remember that there will be time involved in your studies. You will still have projects, papers, and there is usually some type of observation or proctored situation in order to provide validity of your work. Some institutions require that all work is done in a group fashion, therefore guaranteeing student accountability. For many students, group work is not appealing, and just the scheduling, you are able to seek out a program that best suits your needs. This includes schools, and programs of study that work best for your situation, including your learning style, budget, and time frame in which you wish to complete your education.

Learning Online

Online learning has become more than just a fad, it has become a way of bringing education to the student in the 21st century. The progress made in education has usually been on the edge of technology, and online education is no exception. Online education is extremely versatile and can be adapted to handle many different learning styles, schedules, and situations involving learners with special needs. The latter is the most impressive advancement made to date.

According to IDEA ’04, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act revised 2004, it has been stated that any and all accommodations must be made in order to help with the educational process for those that require help. Online learning has bridged this challenge with a remarkable, and relatively inexpensive answer.  Even as recently as five years ago, students with special needs that could handle semi-mainstream classroom environments still struggled, because the inclusion model was not the most conducive for their learning needs. With online learning, students are able to get the one on one attention they need, while supplementing their education with minimal mainstream classroom time. This is a fantastic resolution to a difficult problem.

For other learners, this is a key answer in finding a way to expedite their learning goals. For many students, they are able to have concurrent enrolment in high school, and also with online college classes through their local Community College. For many students that are excelling in school in this area, they are finding that when they graduate High School, they are either complete with their work for an Associates degree, or near completion. Again, this is a fantastic new development for students. Online learning has also expanded the area of Math and Science, the two subjects that the United States has fallen behind in the global market place. Colleges are able to post more classes, require more math and science, and because they are online, students do not feel that they are forced to take more classes, rather they are eligible for more classes.

Quiet Students

There’s a lot you can do as a teacher to get parents, coworkers, and others to communicate with you, but how do you get a student to communicate with you? It may be difficult to have a child in class that won’t talk. What can you do to help that student talk?

You usually see quiet students more in elementary school. You can begin by trying to get them to answer questions out loud. Try asking them something you know they will know; if they don’t know it they will be embarrassed to answer. If they begin talking at all, that is the first step.

You can try to sit them down privately. If this is a small child, don’t try asking them why they won’t talk or you might scare them. Rather, try playing a game with them and ask them questions while you’re playing. It could be a game that requires talking or you can simply try small talk.

You can attempt to get them to talk in small groups. Split the class into small groups for activities and see if they will talk to other students. Put this child with someone they are more likely to talk to. For example, if the child is a boy, put him with other boys.

Give another child an assignment to befriend the one that doesn’t talk. It’s best to choose an outgoing child, and one that will be willing to accept the assignment. Tell the child to ask the other one to play at recess and to report back to you if he or she accepted the offer. The child may not talk because they don’t have any friends.

Don’t leave the child out of anything. Make the child feel welcome in the class. For example, if you celebrate birthdays and theirs is in the summer, try having a half birthday party so they don’t feel left out.
